I get junk email all the time. Lately I've taken to creating filters in gmail based on the sender of the email. In this guide I will walk through a Google Apps Script function I wrote to repeat this repetitive email cleansing ritual.

With this script, instead of creating a filter for an email, I just label the email 'filter' (this could be any label you want). I set the script to run every ten minutes (here's how) and scans my inbox for threads labeled 'filter'.

It then creates a new filter based on the sender's address of the email message. All future emails from the same sender will automatically skip my inbox, get marked as read and archived. The script then applies these same actions on the email labeled 'filter'.

The hardest part of writing this script was understanding how to actually set up a filter with Google App Script. To do so requires using the Advanced Gmail Service.

All told this script saves me about 10 seconds of time per email filter I would have otherwise created manually, so probably a few minutes a month, a few hours a year. Time well spent.

  This function is meant to run on a time-based trigger (I have it set for every 10 minutes).
  When run, the function will create a filter

               Filters in gmail have criteria
               The criteria is the basis on which the filter is applied (e.g. the rule that enables the filter's action).
               In this case the criteria is that the email is sent from the same address as the sender of the current thread.
